Quick answer

Most roof repairs in Fort Wayne cost $350 to $1,800. Replacing a few blown-off shingles or a cracked pipe boot sits at the low end; rebuilding chimney or wall flashing or replacing a section of rotted deck sits at the high end. Most repairs are finished in a few hours, and we can tarp an active leak the same day when weather allows.

How much does roof repair cost in Fort Wayne?

Most roof repairs land between $350 and $1,800. Typical jobs:

Repair What's involved
Replace missing or blown-off shingles Matching shingles, sealing the surrounding tabs
Replace a cracked pipe boot New rubber or lead boot around a plumbing vent
Reseal or replace flashing Step and counter flashing at walls and chimneys
Repair a valley Re-laying shingles and ice and water shield in the valley
Replace a section of deck Cutting out rotted sheathing and re-roofing that area

Steep roofs and two-story homes cost more because of safety equipment and access. If many areas are failing at once, repairs stop making financial sense. We compare both paths honestly in roof repair vs. replacement.

What causes roof leaks?

In Fort Wayne, most leaks come from a short list of places:

  • Pipe boots. The rubber collar around plumbing vents dries out and cracks in the sun, often well before the shingles wear out.
  • Flashing. Metal flashing at chimneys, walls and skylights loosens, rusts or was never installed correctly.
  • Wind-damaged shingles. Spring storms lift and tear shingles, especially older 3-tab shingles.
  • Valleys. Water concentrates in valleys, and worn shingles there leak first.
  • Ice dams. In January and February, snow melts over a warm attic, refreezes at the cold eaves and backs water up under the shingles.
  • Nail pops. Nails pushed up by deck movement wear holes in the shingle above.

Water travels along rafters and decking before it drips, so a stain over your bedroom can start several feet uphill. We trace it from the attic and the roof surface before we quote.

What should I do if my roof is leaking right now?

  1. Catch the water with buckets and move belongings out of the way.
  2. Relieve a bulging ceiling by poking a small hole at the lowest point over a bucket. Trapped water can bring the whole ceiling down.
  3. Turn off power to any light fixture in the wet area.
  4. Don't climb on a wet roof. It's dangerous, especially in wind or ice.
  5. Call us. When weather allows, we can install an emergency tarp the same day to stop more water from getting in until a proper repair is done.

If the leak followed hail or a windstorm, take photos and read our storm and hail damage repair page before calling your insurer.

How do you deal with ice dams?

Ice dams are a winter fact of life in northeast Indiana. Heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the upper roof, and the water refreezes at the cold overhang, building a ridge of ice that pushes water under the shingles.

We can safely clear a dam that's actively leaking, but the lasting fix is in the attic: air sealing, insulation and balanced ventilation so the roof deck stays cold. Many newer homes in Aboite and Perry Township were built with too little soffit intake, which makes ice dams worse. See attic ventilation and insulation. When a roof is replaced, ice and water shield at the eaves is the backup that stops dam water from reaching the deck.

Repair or replace?

A repair is usually right when the roof is under about 15 years old and the problem is in one area: a pipe boot, a section of flashing, a handful of wind-damaged shingles.

Replacement starts to make more sense when the shingles are curling or losing granules across the whole roof, when there are leaks in several places, or when the deck is soft in multiple areas. Older homes in the '07 District and South Wayne sometimes have two layers of shingles over plank decking, and repairs on those roofs don't hold for long. Our free roof inspection gives you photos and both prices so you can decide. More signs to watch for are in signs you need a new roof.

Roof Repair questions

How much does roof repair cost in Fort Wayne?

Most repairs cost $350 to $1,800, depending on the problem, the pitch and access, and whether decking is damaged.

Can you tarp my roof today?

When weather and safety allow, yes. An emergency tarp stops more water from coming in until a permanent repair can be made.

Do I need a permit for a roof repair?

Small repairs like replacing a few shingles usually don't. A re-roof does need a permit from the Allen County Building Department. See our permit guide.

Why is my roof leaking only in winter?

Usually ice dams. Melting snow refreezes at the eaves and backs water under the shingles. Better attic insulation and ventilation is the lasting fix.

Will a repaired spot match the rest of my roof?

We match color and style as closely as current products allow. Older shingles fade, so a patch may look slightly different for a while.

How do I afford a roof repair?

Most repairs are modest. If storm damage caused the leak, your homeowners insurance may cover it minus your deductible. Get a written price first so you know the real number.
